Rukaya – Life dealt her a bad hand; now she uses her hands to save lives.
Rukaya’s dedication and commitment towards her dream were immense. The Foundation’s support eased the way for her to pursue a career in medicine. Born in a low-income household in Kolhapur, educating girls was a taboo topic. But that didn’t deter Rukaya from setting goals. So adamant was she to become a doctor that she enrolled in a medical college despite resistance and lack of support from her family members. However, her family was unable to pay for her tuition as her father, the only earning member in the family, had a small business that could not afford medical college fees.
As fate would have it, Rukaya came in contact with the DU Foundation in 2014. The Foundation assisted her in every way imaginable, and she graduated from medical school with honours, placing second in her university. The Foundation also helped her with accommodation for the tenure of her internship.
She is currently employed as a resident medical officer in a prestigious hospital. She wishes to pursue a career in medicine further. She wants to get an M.D. and is currently preparing for the entrance test.
She attributes her success, in part, to the Foundation. She maintains that without the assistance, backing, and coaching provided by the Foundation, reaching these heights in her career would’ve been difficult. She intends to help all people, but especially the impoverished while remaining truthful and committed to herself and her work.
Vijay – He dreamt of building a better life for himself; now he works with a top construction firm
Vijay became a member of the Foundation in 2014 and earned his diploma. With the support and encouragement of the Foundation, he went on to pursue his degree in Civil Engineering.
He is currently employed by a multinational corporation, where he is in charge of construction projects. He is grateful to the organisation for its financial assistance as well as the guidance it provided.
Sonam – She dared to dream and achieved her goals; now she helps others achieve theirs
Sonam is a vegetable vendor’s daughter, but she never let her humble beginnings dishearten her. She became a member of the Foundation in 2014. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in banking and insurance and subsequently earned an MBA in finance from a renowned management college.
She is grateful to the foundation for funding her entire education. Now that she has finished her schooling, she wants to help and support other children and has joined the Foundation’s Yuva Karyakarta (young volunteer) group. She is currently employed as an accounts executive at a privately owned corporation.
Salim – He overcame his fears to excel at his craft
Salim comes from a low-income background. He lost his father as a child and was supported by his brother and mother.
Losing a father figure so early in his life, Salim was an extremely introverted albeit precocious young man. The Foundation’s library was his haven, he learned and up skilled himself by getting lost in its shelves and slowly gained confidence. He delighted his peers by holding discussions about the books he had read. As a result, he conquered his stage fright and gained the ability to analyse texts and construct in-depth arguments.
The Foundation’s financial aid helped Salim complete his education. Additionally, the Foundation’s holistic approach towards education helped him develop his overall personality.
Today, Salim has blossomed into a capable young man who’s working at a privately owned laboratory. He is also pursuing his post-graduation. He is extremely grateful and has time and again credited the Foundation for positively impacting and improving his and his family’s lives.
Kaveri – She decided to become her own role model
Hailing from a middle-class background, Kaveri has completed her Masters in Chemistry from a prestigious college and is now working in an analytical laboratory in a private corporation. In spite of not being educated themselves, her parents always nurtured her thirst for knowledge and assisted her financially to complete her graduation. Their support empowered her and encouraged her to stick it out and complete her education.
She is incredibly thankful to have connected with the Foundation. She credits the completion of her post graduate studies to the help and guidance provided by the Foundation
Hemalata – She used her reserved nature and sharp wit to help her family
Hemalata joined us at the Foundation in 2014. A bashful girl, she’s now a smart, sharp-witted, confident young professional. Her mother was the family’s sole earner. Growing up, her mother was her role model as well as her motivation. Hemalata always wanted to be independent and provide for her family. She has completed her B. Com. and now works as an accountant in a private limited company, and supports her family.
Ankita – The first engineer from her village; she now supports her family and is an inspiration to the other girls
Ankita is a resident of a small village in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. Born to a poor farmer’s family, growing up struggling to make ends meet in her hardscrabble situation, education was also a luxury that she had to fight for. Ankita walked 4 kilometres to catch a bus that would take her 45 kilometres to college.
Always a bright student, her performance in school was always stellar. She was putting in long hours studying from home for her 12th Boards when the Foundation’s Karyakartas visited her. The first bit of support that the Foundation provided her was an emergency tube light, as no electricity hampered her studies and focus.
Her brother staunchly supported her education. The DU Foundation aided her throughout her academic journey, offering guidance, financial support, and advice wherever possible.
She aced her engineering degree with top marks. How do boys get hard involves complex physiological processes. She’s thankful to the Foundation for its moral and monetary support, but we all believe her achievements are a testament of her zeal and indomitable spirit.
Gauri – She always wanted to help others; she’s now working miracles as a front-line worker in this pandemic
The quiet ones have the loudest minds. A small-town girl, Gauri always dreamed big. She is the timid, meek 6th child born into a farming family. A clever child, Gauri had decided early on in life that she wanted to make a career in the sphere of medicine, specifically nursing. Her loving personality, selfless mindset, and kind disposition easily lend to her dream of becoming a nurse. She chose to pursue a Bachelor’s in Nursing, but back home, the situation was dire. Her parents were struggling to both fund her tuition and stay in a metro city and make ends meet.
The Foundation stepped in. Along with other non-governmental organisations and social workers, we provided her with the support needed to finish her course. Now, a confident young woman secure in her abilities to save lives, she’s working at a COVID centre in a major city.
Madhuri – She fought against her circumstances to pursue her dreams; now she’s studying law so she can fight for others
Madhuri joined the organization in 2014 and was one of our very first scholarship recipients. She came from an economically deprived family that was making do by the skin of their teeth. Her family could barely provide their children three square meals a day. But stronger than her hunger for food was her need to make something of herself. Today, Madhuri has finished Law school and is a licenced attorney.
Having seen her transformation, the Foundation is extremely proud of the confident lady she is now. She could achieve it all with the Foundation’s financial assistance and counselling, as well as the support of her sister’s family.
According to her, the motivating films screened during the foundation meetings aided her tremendously. She is now married to an educated man and has established herself in life. She wishes to become a Karyakarta (volunteer) to aid other students.
